Introducing: Ashley Harrison Photography

How long have you been in the business?

About 2 years, but I’ve been “doing photography” since high school.

Can you tell us about this first picture?

Oh boy. This is one of the first newborn sessions I did, about 7 years ago. It was a family member, and I did it on top of a bed, utilizing a boppy, a blanket, and a bed sheet. I had no posing knowledge and really struggled to get her looking comfortable and relaxed.

Now that you are more experienced, when you look at this first picture, what would you say is wrong with it?

What isn’t wrong with this picture?! For starters, the focus was off! I also didn’t know how to use aperture to my advantage to give me some background blur to hide some of the wrinkles in the sheet. The lighting is flat, and I did very little editing in post processing. The baby doesn’t look comfortable, her face is poorly propped and her fingers and toes are squished. I didn’t know how to shoot at flattering angles, and the baby’s diaper draws my focus away from the subject.

Can you tell us about this second picture?

Compared to my first image, I think it’s obvious that I have come a long way since my early days! This was from one of my recent newborn sessions. I went into the session with a very clear plan in my mind of what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. It went flawlessly, and I was able to deliver a gorgeous gallery to my client!

What is one of the biggest things that contributed to your growth as a Photographer?

Taking online workshops from other talented photographers has given me more growth in the past several years than I had when I was trying to figure everything out on my own. I highly recommend investing in courses, either online or in person, to give yourself the boost and confidence you need to grow as an artist and as a business!

Thank you for sharing, Ashley! Beautiful improvement.
