INTRODUCINGJanie Marie Photography

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE BUSINESS?

Unofficially for 7 years. Officially for 3 years.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS FIRST PICTURE?

This was one of my first “paying” clients. Luckily it is my brother and sister-in-law, so I can retake better photos of them now.

NOW THAT YOU ARE MORE EXPERIENCED, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS FIRST PICTURE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS WRONG WITH IT?

Where to begin? The poor woman is blinded by the sun because I did not know how to position them. I think I tried to crank up the exposure in editing to help with the shadow on his face, but it just made everything worse. The white balance is way off. The angle is not exactly flattering for anyone. I’m sure I was hoping to get one of those super awesome interaction moments. That was not successful, and the image says nothing about the couples relationship. These two have great personalities that I wasn’t good at capturing personalities back then. I was also using a much lower quality camera.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS SECOND PICTURE?

This was an engagement session with a super sweet couple. They were so tender and affectionate that it just melted my heart.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR GROWTH AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?

Investing in education for my business and craft have helped me to grow the most as a photographer. By investing on the business side, I now approach clients with a greater sense of worth and pride in my work. I now that I am providing a quality service that is well planned so the what if’s and doubt are gone allowing me to focus on capturing beautiful images confidently. Investing in education for my craft has improved my art. I have learned how to prompt clients to create real life interaction. I use light and reflectors to help enhance moments, and I make sure the basics like white balance, exposure, metering, and composition are always well executed. Education is an ongoing process and I will continue to invest in my business because it is worth it.

Thank you for sharing, Janie! Beautiful improvement.
