Introducing: Melissa Butler Photography
How long have you been in the business?
Can you tell us about this first picture?
This was my first go at a maternity session… and I knew very little about posing or connecting with my clients.
Now that you are more experienced, when you look at this first picture, what would you say is wrong with it?
The shadows on her face, her limbs being cut off, the flat editing, the lack of connection.
Can you tell us about this second picture?
For this session, the client let me lead, and I didn’t overthink the photography session. We went down to the river, it was a vision I had in my mind for a while now. I directed her on the style of dress to wear, and how to wear her hair. I started talking to her about her children, and this one to come. I loved the movement of the water, the tension in the sky, and the calmness about her.
What is one of the biggest things that contributed to your growth as a photographer?
Letting go of what I thought my photos should be, and stopping myself from comparing myself to other photographers.
I found photography during a very dark time in my life, it brought me distraction, hope, and peace. I like to capture life’s moments as they happen, so that the generations to come look back and FEEL what we felt. I have loved watching photography change over the past 10 years, watching a more lifestyle approach occur. It’s those moments I treasure the most.
Thank you for sharing, Melissa! Beautiful improvement.
