Introducing: Abeille Photography
How long have you been in the business?
Can you tell us about this first picture?
This is from my “first” shoot. These two gorgeous sisters were my kids amazing babysitters. One of them was an aspiring model at the time. (She is now a professional model!)
We met at the “golden hour” prior to sunset since I was told that’s when the best light is. I had just been given a DSLR for my 30th birthday. I learned on film when I was in HS & College, but had to take a break when I couldn’t afford to get my film developed!
I have always be drawn to photographs that the photographer photographed into the sun. It was a big no-no when I was being classically taught. The way the sun + lens angle could create a flair + glimmer was fascinating. So, that evening I had the chance to try it. I also had no idea how to focus on a subject while shooting directly into the sun. I was still shooting on aperture priority at that time since I was learning how to use ISO. So, when I captured this shot I was pretty happy. There are definitely things I would change although I still like it. It was the beginning of a pretty awesome journey.
Now that you are more experienced, when you look at this first picture, what would you say is wrong with it?
Knowing what I know now, I would have upped my aperture to a 2.0 or higher. Lowered my ISO, so it wasn’t so noisy and backed up a bit. I don’t like that they are slightly of center…I would prefer a bit more room on each side of them. I would also have straightened my horizon line ever so slightly.
Can you tell us about this second picture?
This is from a recent wedding I photographed. It was one of the last frames I took before the bride and groom needed to get back to their guests. We had been chasing the light all around the neighborhood of the ceremony. We turned the corner and looked up the hill and it was like a beacon. The street was a bit busy..but I had a vision for this shot. I asked the bride and groom to walk across the crosswalk…they went once and it gave me time to get my settings in correct. They walked across again…but a car came and I needed to move out of the way…the third time I asked them to walk and stop for a few seconds in the middle and give each other a kiss. This was the shot. A car came shortly after and we had to move…I said a prayer as we walked away from the crosswalk and back into the venue. I was pretty stoked when I got home and uploaded the group of photos.
What is one of the biggest things that contributed to your growth as a photographer?
H A R D W O R K.
I had never “edited” a photograph in anything other than a real life Light Room (aside from an Instagram filter!). I developed from film negatives to developing my own prints…I only knew how to dodge and burn the old school way!
After I -so graciously- started getting paid to photograph, I purchased Lightroom. I had NO IDEA what I was doing, I just began to learn by trial and error. (And youtube tutorials!)
I literally dream of photography. It doesn’t matter if I have a camera or not, I am always looking at light and people and thinking about how to capture it or how I -would- capture it if I was shooting at that moment. I don’t drive by a grassy field or swoony brick building without the thought crossing my mind of: How the light is hitting it? Is it Eastern or Western exposure? On and on…
Although, I feel the biggest thing that has contributed to my growth is seeking out other photographers. It really is all about community. I am so blessed to be surrounded by a wealth of extremely diverse and talented creatives.
My biggest words of advice are BE YOURSELF and find some other artists that you trust wholeheartedly. Allow them to speak the honest truth and walk though all the difficulties that come with putting your heart out there for the world to see and then trying to find balance within your home life. (It’s TOUGH!!)
Then, keep shooting and dreaming!!
Thank you for sharing, Dannie! Beautiful improvement.
