INTRODUCING: Ashley Hamm Photography
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE BUSINESS?
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS FIRST PICTURE?
Oh man. Well, what can I say? I had a kit camera and some really great friends to help me practice my craft. I was always the picture-taker in my group of friends, so I think somewhere in my mind I thought that engagement photography would be easy.
NOW THAT YOU ARE MORE EXPERIENCED, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS FIRST PICTURE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS WRONG WITH IT?
Clearly, looking at this photo (and what kind of editing this is…) I knew very little about proper exposure and lighting. I very much love the pose and the connection between them, which is truly my favorite part of an engagement session! It’s all about experience, and at the time I had very little gear and very little experience working in dark spaces.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS SECOND PICTURE?
This second photo is from one of my favorite weddings of 2017, in one of the busiest and challenging years of my photography career. It was in 2014 that I went full time and from there I threw myself into my craft. This wedding was stunning with a sweetheart couple, great weather, and a beautiful backdrop. Beyond great gear, shooting in RAW and manual, it’s important to learn proper lighting and your style. I love this photo because of the way Andrew is looking at his beautiful bride Alison. I have always loved the moments when my clients completely forget that I’m there, and are truly present with each other, enjoying each moment of their family session or wedding day.
WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR GROWTH AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?
Take chances. If it doesn’t turn out, take another shot. Take 1000 shots. If it’s too dark, adjust your settings. Rent new lenses and experiment. Try and try again. There is no such thing as failure, there are only lessons.
Thank you for sharing, Ashley! Beautiful improvement.
